BACKGROUND INFO

This mix is about how it all began. These are not only my personal roots, but the roots of today's dance music. With monumental tracks like Rapper's Delight (The first track to introduce the world outside of the ghetto to rap muisc), Shannon bringing Electro to the mainstream dancefloors all over the world, Giorgio Moroder's Chase and Donna Summer's I feel love (clearly 2 of the earliest techno tracks), some fine soulfull tracks by the Trammps, The O'Jays and some rare funk classics like Jerry Knight's Overnight Sensation along with D'Train and the Strikers. Ofcourse Dan Hartman joins us too with his masterpiece Relight my fire. And last but not least the true examples of disco in it's purest form, Sylvester's You make me feel, Stacy Lattisaw's Jump to the Beat and Freddie james' Get up and boogie.

This mix simply needed to be made to highlight my personal favorites on the dancefloor. Prince and madonna refused to join the party and as I can see it, it is their loss that they are not in this mix.

So, what happens next,
A list is made, tracks are cleared to be used in the mix and a search begins to find all these 12" versions on CD. It turned out that many CD's only contained radio edits and where processed numerous times beyond recognition. Special CD compilation boxes where found of of Casablanca containing excellent masters of Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer. The Sugarhill Collection with 15 min versions of Rappers Delight and magnificent sounding The Message. Many special 12" CD's by Uniwave in Canada containing crisp versions of Bobby Thurston and Indeep. I hereby pay my respect to those people who made it their mission to find and compile the finest sounding masters for the future to enjoy. The re-mastered versions of the Arcade Dance Classics series proved to be a valuable source for excellent 12" CD masters. And for those masters that seemed nowhere to be found, I have to thank Frans vd Kamp for his efforts to not only find them, but getting them to me faster than teh speed of light. Martin Boer also went through his CD archive to find missing tracks to help me out, as well as Gerben Baartman. Thank you all !!

A few tracks unavailable on CD were transferred from vinyl using a Stanton 681EEE mounted on an SL1200. Using a Studer phone pre-amp, the signal was recorded into the Alesis Masterlink and mastered on CD.

All tracks where then checked for their exact BPM using the built-in BPM counter in the Pioneer CDJ1000. The tracks were then entered in a database and sorted by tempo and key.

The Grandmix Disco Edition was made using 2 pioneer CDJ1000's. These revolutionary new CD players with excellent Master Tempo are used to quickly try-out the best possible combinations and locations in the seperate tracks to make the perfect mix. All sections needed for a particular crossfade are pitched and recorded seperately into the Akai DD1500. Often the Master Tempo feature is used on just one of the 2 tracks in a crossfade, returning to "normal (non-pitch corrected) mode" immediately after the crossfade is completed.

CDJ1000 mulitimediacard merger
Merges all CD data of any number of mulitimediacards into one file which can be copied files for back-up and ofcourse be copied back to all your mulitimediacards in a matter of seconds.

Pioneer CDJ1000

The Grandmix Disco Edition is digitally edited on the AKAI DD1500 Digital Audio Workstation.

This DD1500 has 28 hours of recording time at 44.1 KHz 16 bit stereo. And can record up to 16 tracks simultaneously. The DD1500 does not use any audio mp3 or other destructive data compression.

AKAI dd1500

Most of the tracks are unprocessed. Only a few tracks are digitally EQ'd, in the DD1500 to give them a bit more punch in the low frequencies.

The mix is then mastered onto the Alesis Masterlink, where also the track id's were added. With it's 5,4 hours continuous recording time, the Alesis Masterlink was also ideal to broadcast the 3 hour continuous mix on
Radio 538 on new year's eve.
